X Marks The Spot - Treasure Hunts That Boys Will Love

Creating your own treasure hunt for kids sounds like it could take a lot of work, but of all the fun ideas you can create, this is probably the easiest and least time-consuming. Here’s how it’s done and a few things to consider:

How Many Kids On The Treasure Hun?

If you’re planning the treasure hunt for your own kids then it’s pretty easy to manage the whole exercise as a step by step expedition. The kids will love taking the time to read their own clues and figuring out what to do and where to go next.

If it’s for a kids party, then sorry, but at the mention of “treasure” you’re going to have 20+ kids running around in a crazy storm trying to find it so you’re going to have to be a bit more structured and you may have to either guide the clue-reading like in a classroom (remember, most kids 6-9 actually like school and are used to receiving instruction this way) or make sure each child gets a turn reading a clue.

Decorating Your Map & Clues

This is the fun part. Type up your clues in MS Word or Google Docs and use a great old pirate font like “Treasure” or “Booter” – you can download these free for personal use at 1001fonts.com.

Each clue only needs to take up two lines, so you should be able to fit about 10 clues on a sheet of A4 paper. Print them out and then go and soak a tea bag for a few minutes in some water and then go ahead and smear it all over the sheet. Give it about an hour to dry out and then if you want to go a little over the top, light the stove and burn all the edges slightly with the flame. Once done, cut each clue into its own strip, roll it, and tie it with string.

What Is The Treasure?

Make sure you have enough treasure for everybody – it doesn’t have to be something substantial, but just something that rewards the efforts of your little treasure hunters.

Chocablock has some great chocolate gold coins that you can personalise with the birthday boy or girl’s name if you like. Depending on the theme of your hunt e.g. pirates, archaeological dig, saving a princess, African jungle – they can create any design you like for the same price of less than a dollar a coin.
